Sonic Games

Sonic the Hedgehog is the star of the popular video games bearing his name. This adorable character made his debut 20 years ago in the Sonic the Hedgehog game for Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. Once the Sega Dreamcast met its demise, the popular character went multi-platform. In 2006, sonic games were made available for Xbox 360 and PS3 and more recently, Wii games were developed featuring Sonic.

In the original games, the popular blue hedgehog attempted to save the world from different threats, namely Dr. Ivo Eggman Robotnik. Over the years, this evil doctor has been joined by additional antagonists and Sonic has been thrust into various adventures. Non-2D platform games like Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball, a pinball simulation game, were released for Sega systems. Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut was originally released for GameCube and then ported to the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade in 2010.

Sonic games are also available for PS2, PSP, and Nintendo DS. By the end of 2006, Sonic the Hedgehog had arrived for the PS3 and Xbox 360. Exciting crossover Mario and Sonic games are available for the DS and Wii. The first was Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, released in 2007, followed by Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games in 2009. Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood is a role playing, turn-based game that was released in 2008.

Those who play sonic games will enjoy the Storybook sub-series and episodic Sonic the Hedgehog 4. The newest sonic games to hit shelves include Sonic Colors for Wii and Sonic Free Riders for the Kinect controller-free Xbox 360 system. Sega is commemorating the 20th anniversary of Sonic by releasing a new Sonic game for PS3 and Xbox 360 that features the old Sonic character alongside the new one. A trailer of this currently untitled game was released in early April.

The video game rating system makes it easy for parents to find sonic games for kids. For their youngest children, parents should look for games that are rated “E” for everyone. These include the Sonic Classic Collection and Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing for Nintendo DS, the sonic and mario games, Sonic Free Riders, and Sonic and the Secret Rings for Wii.

Game lovers can play Sonic games online when they are not playing those they bought for their video game systems. Spending a lunch hour perfecting the game-playing skills through online flash games is a great way to pass the time. Many of these online games are also suitable for children to play.
